Wonderful Late Fall Days at the Zoo

December 18, 2014
Fall is finally winding down. Pumpkins and fallen leaves are making way for candy canes and snow, and New England is gearing up for the winter ahead. At the Roger Williams Park Zoo, the warm weather animals are moving to their indoor enclosures for the season. The elephants and giraffes, for example, will most often be viewable from their pavilion building. Families might also catch a glimpse of the new young female giraffe, Tufani, getting acclimated to her new companions, giraffes Jaffa Prince, Amber and Sukari. On the other hand, the Zoo’s more cold-hardy animals, like the snow leopards, red pandas, and moon bears of the Marco Polo exhibit area will be thriving in their naturalistic outdoor enclosures throughout the late fall and winter months.

Paint Nights at the Zoo

The Zoo has a lot of great family events, but they’re also adding a little fun for the grownups with new Paint Nights at the Zoo. These nighttime events are instructor-led workshops for adults to paint their very own animal-themed masterpieces that can be proudly displayed at home or given as a gift for the holidays. Paint Night is a 16+ event, and participants age 21 and over will enjoy a glass of red wine as part of the admission fee ($35 per person), which also includes all of the painting supplies. Advanced registration is required online, and dates for this event can be found on the Zoo’s website by following links for Education.

National Bison Day at the Zoo

This year, Congress passed a resolution making the first Saturday in November National Bison Day to commemorate the significant role this species has played in our country’s history and culture. The reintroduction of the American bison is one of the country’s greatest conservation success stories. Once extinct in the wild, the species is now considered “near threatened,” and has made a significant comeback to the wild, open frontiers of the United States.

The Roger Williams Park Zoo celebrated this inaugural event by providing food-based enrichment for their three American Bison, which included one of their favorite treats, bamboo. North American animal keeper, Rebecca Phillips, noted that the terms “bison” and “buffalo” are not interchangeable. “They are two completely different species, and are only distantly related,” she said.

People can visit the Zoo’s bison, Clementine, Thelma and Nutmeg, in their enclosure near the pronghorns and the red wolves.

Get details on these events and more at www.rwpzoo.org. Please note, the Zoo will be closed on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25). Zoo hours October - March: 10am – 4pm, with last admission at 3:30pm.
